Future Internet Routing (FIR)

The objective of this project is the development, evaluation, and improvement of routing architectures for the future Internet. Objectives are maximizing flexibility while minimizing complexity. The project includes the following issues.

  • Novel protection switching mechanisms for IP and MPLS networks
  • Bit Indexed Explicit Replication (BIER)
  • New protocols and services leveraging the locator/identifier split
  • Mapping systems for locator/identifier split
  • Tunneling mechanisms
  • Intelligent software-defined network control
  • Network virtualization
